i'm using windows xp and i was running adaware to do my usual maintenance. halfway thru it started making this grinding noise for a while and running really slow, and then it just restarted itself. i had to run windows in "last configuration that worked" cuz otherwise it wouldn't start up. but what do i do to fix this? whats wrong? help! i don't wanna pay a couple hundred or more to get it professionally fixed. and adaware shouldn't be doing this to the comp. it never has before.

There are a lot of stuff to be said, it could be any:
- Software Problem:
Error in Windows System Files

- Hardware Problem:
Processor over heating
RAM not working properly
Computer fans not working properly
Hard Disk Spinning Errror

I recommend trying to repair Windows through the Installation Media Source (the CD) by booting the computer witht the CD, then going into setup mode and choose repair.

Otherwise, try backing up all your valueable data, format the Primary Partition, and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows...

Good Luck

Don't know how old your pc is or what type it is, but if your computer made a grinding noise, then one of two things may have happened.
1. you have a "disk drive" that didn't have a disk in it when the computer was turned on and the grinding noise was caused by the disk drive spinning with no disk (not likely on newer comps, since most don't come with disk drives anymore)
2. you have a hard drive fault. If this is what happened, then you may need to have someone fix it for you. If you are a little adventurous and have some free time, you can do this yourself, or have a techie friend lend a hand.

Go into Control Panel and disable your screen saver, (in Display) it will cause ad aware and defrag problems. Then turn the screen saver back on when you finish your clean up.

Also, Ad Aware wants to update every time you launch, so let it do that, takes a few min. and you'll get a new version.

Noise could be a ram problem, maybe ? Less than 520 + ?

Does it only restart when you run spyware? And the grinding noise is it your hard drive or a CD in the CD ROM? If you have recently updated drivers i suggest you try doing a driver roll back thru control panel (system then device manager) Email me if it persists with a bit more info please.
