As for this being a new trend. Be careful what you ask for from this trend.
If it be becomes trendy to concentrate wealth into a few foundations what might the unintended consequences be? Will it result in some things will be well funded and many others will go underfunded? In this particular case I see no problem unless it attracts scoundrels and the money ends up wasted.
However, I think the world would be better served if men like Warren Buffett had their own individual visions. Unforeseen consequences can easily result from putting your eggs in too few philanthropic enterprises.
For example what if a small bias towards funding research of AIDS results in too little funding for malaria projects or safe water.

Yes it will and it should.
People who are not super-rich like Bufett and Gates also need to give to charity, one way to do this is by buy things from people/merchants/companies who are dedicating a serious amount of the money generated by their sales to charity(not just the token 10-20% that qualifies as a tax deduction).
I think this is such a great thing that Buffet is setting an example by giving his money for causes and people who are really in need. We all should be thankful for what we have and try to remeber the less fortunate and help in whatever way possible.

Does it make you happy that the charity world is essentially becoming the control of one man? That's not a trend I support.

Sure, I'll leave 'em a buck and a half (if my socialist government, a pack-of-thieves hospital billing-department, or a crooked hmo don't get it all). There you have it: a trend!

I wonder if it was to avoid paying tons of money in taxes? But then why not have it go to "charity" rather than fund the government's machine?

No. The rest of the world will continue to be selfish as hell. But it's a nice thought, eh?
