specifically between the north and the south. How did the separation between the north and south come about. please list references.

This sounds like a homework assignment. If it is, then you should be doing your own research. And the seperation culminated in the Civil War. You may have heard of it.

the separation came about partially because the Pilgrims ran out of beer and decided to land up in Massachussets rather than set sail and continue on to NY which was their original destination (they left about 2 to 3 months late). This group was always anti-slavery. you can see this in the book 'Mayflower'.

Mainly British colonies, the first colony (i believe it was Virginia) and several of the eastern states were once British colonies.
