18 x 0.35 = $6.30
convert the percentage to decimal by moving the decimal point to the left twice. that gives you 0.35. then you multiply 18 dollars with 0.35, which gives you 6 dollars and 30 cents.

I always do the cross multiply thingy. You know that 35 is a percentage of 100 so put that on the right side (35/100) On the other side you want to know what part of 18 is 35%. So you put an X over 18.
X = 35
18 = 100
then you just cross multiply. 35X18=630
then divide 630 by 100 = 630. Move the decimal point and BANG.. $6.30 is 35% of $18.00
It looks hard but it's not. It works for all sorts of things.. And you can check it too. Let's say the question was:
$6.30 is 35% of what?
You'd set that up like this:
6.30 = 35
X = 100
Solve: 6.3 X 100 = 630
630 divide by 35 = $18.00
What percent of $18.00 is $6.30?
6.30 = X
18.00 = 100
Solve: 6.3X100=630
630 divided by 18 = 35 %
Hope that helps.
EDIT: They don't format very well, but the setup should look like two fractions that equal each other. The text formattin here won't show that.

% means per 100, so 35% means 35 per 100 or for every 100 cents (or $1) in the original, the new amount is going to have 35 cents. since there are 18 dollars in the original, there are 35*18 cents or 630 cents, which is $6.30

35% of $1.00 is 35 cents, right?
So 35% of $18 is just 35 cents x 18.
