I have been sefl-employed most of my life. I have tried and failed at some things, tried and had modest success at others, and finally tried and had huge success. It wasn't easy, and I am not sure that many would have wanted to go through the troubles I went through, but the end reward was worth it.

The best thing to do is to educate yourself about the different ways to make money. You could start your own business or just make money online. There are limitless ways. You could sell stuff on ebay - get a resellers permit so you could buy things at wholesale and then sell them on ebay.
The best thing to do is think of something people want that they dont already have and that you could buy cheaper than people would buy it from you for. That's how business works. Finding something people want that no one else has and selling it to as many as you can. Check out itsjustmoney.info for some online options.
Anything you do will work no matter what it is, you just have to make that first step and work on it. If you never give up then you never fail. Think about all the stupid businesses out there and how much better you could do them, and then start! Ebay has an affiliate program (so does almost every other big site) that you can sign up for free and they'll give you a link. If anyone clicks on that link you'll get paid and commission for their bids. All you have to do is find a way to click on your links by getting a web site or something else.
The secret is actually doing something and not giving up the first time you get disappointed. Just be patient and you can do anything!

I've been self employed for 3 years. I'm not a very good sales person so I sub-contract. I work as a systems analyst. I work "through" other consulting companies. They take a share of the revenue in exchange for finding the client for me. It could be an easy way for you to start (depending on your field). The consulting company handles all of the networking but I can still remain completely independent. I find it far more lucrative than being a regular employee of a consulting company.

On any given day, about 10% of the U.S. workforce is self-employed. Contrary to popular opinion, self-employment is not all fun and games. A self-employed person is more likely to have no health insurance or to be insured as a dependent of another person (usually, a spouse). There is no discernble statistical difference between earnings of the self-employed and paid employees, once education has been controlled for. There are more people who characterize themselves as retired from a previous occupation among the self-employed compared to paid employees (meaning that some people start self-employment in retirement as a hobby or secondary source of income). Compared to paid employees, more self-employed people say they chose their current occupation because their choice of occupation was limited by health issues.

I was co-founder of a trucking company with my husband (now my ex). We researched the market and started the business in 1978. It's still going strong with him running it. Another business I founded was that of a weekly newspaper...started it in 1996 and sold it in 1999 due to financial setbacks. Someone owns it and it, too, is still in business.
