The suffix -stan or -sthan means in Persian "home of", and appears in the names of many countries and regions, especially in Asia. For example, "Turkmenistan" would mean "the home of the Turkmen."

"stan" is a Muslim suffix meaning "land". So Kurdistan is the "land of the Kurds". Turkmenistan is the "land of the Turkmen", etc. If the suffix "stan" is in a nation's name, it was/is a Muslim nation. ie. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakstan, etc.
