Try "Dead of Night" a British portmanteau movie from 1945. My kids still won't watch it and they are 17 and 21! It's the ventriloquist's dummy apparently. Plus "The Uninvited" which is strictly speaking a ghost story but when I saw it as a kid I was literally behind the sofa! Haven't managed to see it since though

"Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin is one of the scariest movies I've seen. It's soooo good!
