Suicide is only illegal in SOME countries. In some places, a ritual suicide is not only legal, its mandatory in the face of great failure or shame.

Suicide is frowned upon in US society because as a nation we all agree that any life is a precious gift from some God. To throw that away is to risk eternal damnation (at least as far as religion goes). This is why its so difficult to get an abortion in the US.

The thing that always confuses ME is, the government wants to be able to tell you you HAVE to have this child, but what you do to it after its born is your business. If they were really concerned about our kids, both the wanted and UNwanted, our public school system would be the best in the world, no child would go to sleep hungry tonight, or fearful of being either physically or sexually abused.

So many suicides happen, where the person committing the act takes family members. neighbors, even total strangers with them. Its a part of the depression which triggered the suicide in the first place. They feel that if THEY cant go on, neither can anyone else in the family, even if THEYRE not depressed. I think the laws were passed in the vain hope that if someone is that depressed, JUST before driving the car into that crowd of people, the potential suicider takes a second and thinks, "Whoa! This IS illegal, maybe I oughta think about it a little more".

All that being said, someone who knows their life is ending, doesnt take anyone else's life in the process and has a qualified doctor present to ensure a quick and painless passing, I see nothing wrong with doctor assisted suicides. But then, I aint God. He or She may have a whole different take on this than I do.

I agree with you on this one. I ve thought about it a lot and I think that society makes it such a big deal, because in a way, every born baby is like an investment. Parents invest in it, but so does society, for example free public education is a form of investment, society is preparing the child to be a cog in the machine, another worker. therefore, a suicide is like the easy way out and essentially, it s a loss to the company , aka society. This was my cynical viewpoint. On the other hand, another reason why society makes it such a big deal is because of religion and its impact on people s thinking. We as a western society( i m in USA, so i m writing with this paradigm in mind), grow up to view the human life as valuable, almost holy and try every means we can think of to prolong it, even to the point of messing with nature and turning people into vegetables, just so they can be "alive". But people forget that being alive is not just a function of the physical body, but also the spirit and the mind, and so even in perfect health, a sick spirit can make you more dead that a cancer patient with high spirits. Unfortunately though, our current way of viewing the world is very limited to what the eyes or instruments can see and thus, we only treat physical ailments, while forgetting the spirit. Anyhow I digressed a bit, but I really liked your question, and I hope my answer satisfies you

A peaceful society is one that values every life as sacred. Even if sacred isn't part of your world view, then special could substitute. If it were widely accepted that life is disposable like contact lenses, or an old car, then the collective value would be corrosive. As we make decisions about our health we would assume hey, this really isn't worth the effort, why try to live healthy. Or any behavior that risked death wouldn't be avoided so much.

So when you want wide approval or permission for suicide, we can't go there because in order for us to get along safely we must cherish life, and must avoid seeing life has cheep or without having impact upon others.

Your life and my life are connected even though we don't see or know each other. By taking the time to think of your question, and answer it I am a changed person. I have altered part of me because you lived. You have also been altered by my life slightly by taking the time to ask a question and read it. That's why I don't have the power to give another permission to die. Because I cannot fully account for the impact that the life has had and could have if it were left to live.

because people who are happy with thier lives cannot understand why someone would give up life, opportunity, and whatever makes you want to keep living. Also, people believe that those who commit suicide may not be in the right/usual/normal mindset, and are just emotionally unstable, which is important to remember because theres no going back from suicide. Some people just believe living isn't worth the pain that comes with the happiness, or the pain of life outweighs the little joy that they have.

I'M A CHRISTIAN.......The reason is this, GOD..in his infinte wisdom, gave us a few gifts. The arguably greatest of which is LIFE itself. He gave you the opportunity to Live, Love and be Loved. He also gave you the option to make choices. If you took a gift your mother gave you, such as a car or porcelain doll and you destroyed it because it was too hard to drive or ugly to you....wouldnt she be upset. GOD is the same way....how dare you reject a gift that I gave you out of the kindness of my heart. If you don't want it, hold onto it out of respect for the person that gave it to you.

If you want a non christian perspective, the effect suicide has on everyone around you is trmendous. Some people love you just because your alive and dont want to see people destroy themselves.....meaning the physical carnage or the waist of human potential. Others like you as a companion and would be seriously wounded by your departure.

In my opinion, it is because the person committing suicide usually does not tell anyone in advance. Or if they do, they are not being taken seriously. That means the death is a sudden shock to family and friends. People run a gambit of emotions from blame that they didn't know, to guilt for not doing more to prevent it, to anger that the person did it in the first place. I think in the cases of the terminally ill, if they were allowed to choose their own ending, it wouldn't be that big of a deal because their family and friends could be there to say goodbye. The funny thing about death is that it's rarely about the one who died. it's about the living and how those who are left behind are coping with their loss.

It's the same reason why people make a big deal about women getting abortions.

Some women didn't ask to get pregnant on behalf of personal reasons.

People make a it a big deal because they have nothing better to do with their lives than complain, morn or just media blast the issue just to confirm that it happens.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian is a pathologist who was trying to help old people who felt they needed help with suicide.

They couldn't stand life not being able to support or help themselves.

They wanted to die with dignity.

A big deal was made out of it and now he's in prison.

I hate whiners who just don't get it.

They always have to ruin everything.

Logically you are right. But there are people who are thankful for getting the opportunity to live. All of a sudden for a silly matter some times some of them may commits suicide. This is the reason society is concerned about.

it is against the law, but if one attempts and fails suicide there is not civil penalty.

In the old days, people who commited suicide wouldn't be burried in graveyards. That may still be true in the caatholic church.

The basic reason is that a person who kills themself lets other people down because the people who knew the suicider should have done more to help the suicider.

Of course religion has it's say on the issue, but you asked about society which is not necessarily religous.

One beautiful thing about suicide is that they really don't give a crap what society thinks. The only people who care are those who haven't done it. We never have to ask permission to die because if someone is serious enough about it, they'll make sure it's done right.
