you can ask nicely like " Hey dad remember the mp3 player the one I let you barrow... Well i was hoping you where done using it because i simply need it back.
you can put an excuse afterwards like "because i need to download other stuff or clean it out..." you can also tell him that you saw realy cheap ones in a store and it would be cool for him to get one or you to get a new one.

Just ask him if he's done with it.If he says no,ask him how much longer he needs it.If you are not satisfied with his answer,talk about how much he likes it and suggest he look into purchasing one for himself.Tell him that you will be glad to help him pick out one.

dont sound bitter
and just ask it straight forward theres no use in beating around the bush u need to get it back
