The first thing I would suggest is to put a call into your cable provider and see if there is any issues or problems. Sometimes they may be doing updates or doing equipment replacement that can cause similar issues.

Also, try running a new cable from the cable jack to your cable modem. This will test whether the problem is with the cable or something else.

Getting updated drivers for your cable modem is also suggested. New firmware may help this issue from reappearing.

As to answer your question why... there are too many possible reasons to list. It's a matter of process of elimination.

Check your network connections in the control panel to see if it is set to time out.
