Anyone else think the standard of refeering in the WC is terrible?Ok, make a few refs have done ok but i've seen most of the games and think the majority have been awful. Could it be too much pressure on them from Fifa?, or are too many of them just not used to refing big games?I think TV replays would help for important decisions, i.e penaltys and whether the ball has crossed the line. Also, players should be punished after the game for diving if they win a penalty or get someone sent off. (The portuguese are very good at this.)

I think that the problem is that players are diving and cheating a lot more than ever before so it is much harder on referees. However, some referees seem to just enjoy handing out yellow and red cards and these do often spoil games. Referees need to be advised as to when someone is diving both by their assistants and through ear pieces an this should reduce the amount of cheating, and wrong decisions in the game.

I'm not sure...but I have to say, the penalty call in the US Ghana match was pretty bad. I am a brand new soccer fan, but even I can see that the amount of yellow cards being given are ridiculous, in some instances. Except for a few awful calls though, I think the reds are pretty fair, like when Deco picked up the ball yesterday in the middle of play. So I'm kinda split.

Yea I mean 4 red cards in one game? But some of them had to be called like Deco's. But Italy's penalty kick was all fair Neil stuck his hands out and tripped Grosso you can't do that. And its good that the Ref made that call because Materazzi's red card was absolutely not a red card.

I just watched Ukraine-Switzerland...in this game the ref was too forgiving I think. If he would have passed out some yellow cards maybe that would have brought a little life to the game.I think some refs just aren't...worthy enough for world class games.

I agree, the refereeing has been sub-par. I think that there might be pressure from the FIFA due to the ever-growing popularity of the sport! It seems that the WC becomes substantially "bigger" every four years!

The referee's can't seem to please anyone. They give out cards and people whine. They restrict cards, people whine. They try to talk to players, people whine.
It's a thankless job.
Why don't you pick apart the players half as much as you pick apart the referees! At this level, the players should know to adjust their style of play based on how the game is getting played.

the worst reff had to be the one for Italy giving them a penalty kick. there was no reason for one. I felt so bad for the Australians because both deserved it but they shouldn't have lost like that.

Refs should be punished economically for their bad performances. And rewarded for their good ones.
