When I asked a man that is known for his love of sports what he tought of soccer and the 2006 FIFA World Cup he was eger to answer. And suprisingly he answers, "Soccer is about as interesting as watching paint dry."
I for one was very insalted by that comment as a player and as a fan.
So, tell me the truth. Is that what the US really thinks of soccet?

Oh, come on... Let's stop with the derogatory answers about the US and soccer. I, for one, absolutely love it. I've had a great time watching the World Cup. My roommates (both Americans) and I have recently spent our afternoons watching the games. I'd also really like to play, but I'm pretty bad at sports so I don't know how that would go over.

However, not everyone in the US loves soccer. I think this has something to do with the fact that soccer is televised without commercial breaks. This makes the major television companies less likely to carry it (even though there is a Fox soccer channel you can subscribe to) because they make a lot of their money on advertisements, which sports like (American) football allow for. Still, soccer is a popular sport in American high schools, and I hope to see its popularity increasing as people become more drawn into the World Cup this year.

Yeah, it seems that the majority of Americans don't care for soccer, but hey, the majority of Americans voted for Bush-so what does that tell you. Having said that, I am an American and absolutely love soccer! Anyone who refers to soccer as boring just doesn't get it. Soccer is the most vibrant and alive sport there is-there is constant movement, without breaks, and the players have skills and techniques that shine through-out the game, so even if teams don't make goals (too many people are goal-oriented) the game is exciting! I just might have to move to another country where the game is appreciated!

Actually, many people in the US really don't care about soccer. We have many sports, American football, basketball, baseball, hockey, so we have other things to play and watch. Other places in the world don't have all these sports. There are people here that still love soccer, but as a country, it is not near as popular as the other sports.

Watching the TV show, Married with Children, where Al Bundy often calls soccer, a "girl's sport", I'd say yeah.

I guess most Americans think that baseball, basketball, hockey, and football are more fun to watch. You see a lot more "great plays" in those sports, with more frequency. Baseball has the "double play" and "grand slam", for example. Hockey is super-fast, and has fights in it. Football has the hail mary. Basketball, has the three pointer and slam dunk.

What does soccer have that's as cool as any of those things?

Awesome plays are what people watch sports for, and I think in soccer those moments are harder to come by.

Even though a lot of American kids play soccer in their youth, I guess as they age, they realize that while soccer is a fun sport to play, but it's not as fun to watch.

Unfortunately when it comes to sports in the US soccer is probably the least televised sport so not many people follow it. Personally I love soccer...love to watch it love to play it. For whatever reason it just isn't followed as much here as other countries...gosh we couldn't even give it the right name :-)

Not at all; I love soccer, and this person is wrong! If America wasn't so one sided in commercialization of sports, maybe people would learn to appreciate the game and what it's worth.

the US hasn't really been exposed to soccer. it's not really their sport. so, yeah, i think the majority of people in the US think that soccer is just a bunch of people running around and kicking a ball. however, this american thinks that it's the best game in the world, full of passion, teamwork, and the most physically challenging. powerful elegance. :o)

Yeah... pretty much, nobody cares worth a flip. As soon as this World Cup craze is over, everybody in America is gonna forget about for the next four years.

I can't say. the US is a country, and not a person, so it doesn't think or say anything. A lot of Americans don't care about soccer, but a lot do.

I think it's because america aren't winners at football (soccer) so they pretend it doesn't exist and just play sports that they can win as no one else plays them
