I have 2 ac units for my house - one upstairs and one downstairs. My contractor tells me that one of the units needs to be replaced and quoted me $6k. Is this reasonable? Sounds awfully expensive. Any thoughts?

depend on where you live, the seer rating of the replacement, how hard it is to get old one out and replace and such, but does seem a little high.....

I had a new 3.5 ton Rheem put in last year, rated 12 Seer, which included the new outdoor compressor unit with the new indoor blower/furnace, for $3500. Be sure to get several estimates as they can vary widely. Rheem/Ruud are very good units with the good scroll compressor.
