As I recall (from years ago)....
Start with several different colors of thread. Tie them all together at one end with a knot, leaving enough at the end to eventually tie the bracelet on to your wrist.
Use a safety pin or something to secure the knotted end to something (I always either pinned it to my jeans, right by the knee, or the couch arm or something. A "work surface")
Straighten the strands of thread so they lay flat on your surface, and starting from the left, tie strand 1 and 2 together in a simple knot. Move to the right and tie 2 and 3, 3 and 4, and so on til u get to the last two. Now go back to the left and start again. As I recall, this makes the colors make a diagonal pattern.
