Yes, some countries will require a Visa. Also, you need a Passport to get back into the United States. You can search for the Country you want to Visit and add consulate. Should find their offices here in U.S. along with address and phone.
Just for an example, I typed; "Germany Consulate" gave me many choices here one in Washington D.C.; http://www.germany.info/relaunch/index.html
There are others; Miami, for example. Best to find the one closest to you for the Countries you want. Remember, some may not require a VISA some will, find out!!!

No, you don't need a visa to visit Western Europe as a tourist. If you plan on spending more than three months somewhere you'll need a visa though.
And of course you need a passport to enter those countries and to go between countries in Europe.
