If you are a true novice and don't want to spend much time learning how to make a site, I would suggest the current super-popular MySpace. You can quickly get your information up for all your friends to see.

If you are interested in something more, but still fairly simple try GeoCities or Yahoo.

If you are willing to learn HTML I would suggest ATSPACE.COM. You can create a website for FREE up to 50MBs in size. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. NO ADS, NO BANNERS. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". Of course you'll either need to learn HTML or use one of the WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage or DreamWeaver to actually design your site. e-mail me if you need some help...

If you want your own domain and have it hosted, I suggest ReadyHosting. You get 1GB of space unlimted e-mail accounts, FTP access and domain name registration all for $99 a year.

Web hosting site (FREE):
http://www.atspace.com
Web hosting site (COST):
http://www.readyhosting.com
FTP Explorer site:
http://www.ftpx.com

A couple of my websites:
Pioneer Baseball Website (ReadyHosting - Cost)
http://www.pioneerbaseball.org
My Son's Travel Team's Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)
http://tricountytitans.atspace
Family Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)

Expect to pay a monthly recurring cost of $20-30 a month depending on what kinds of features your site implements (blogs, rss feed, etc)

You can pay someone to design your site - on average, it costs about $300.00 for a 3-5 page web site. Again - this is an average figure and not a quote.

Feel free to contact me if you would like a proposal.

Cheers!
Or you can use templates that are provided by the hosting company. In that case, they are generally free. But you get what you pay for - that is a site that looks similar to other sites out there.

I recently started up through Yahoo Webhosting and put together a page for a family member. Not done but, schaubbuildingmaintenance.com...Used their tools, with no experience other than basic computer knowledge. Definately give it a try. Or you can get a Pro...costs 500-1000 or more for a good one....Yahoo start up cost me 12 bucks....

Good Luck!!

Bear in mind the Pro's earn their money with VAST amounts of knowledge about issues that you wont learn using hosting tools.
Weigh your options carefully!!

Really depends on your requirements, what you want on the site, and how big it'll be. Probably best to speak to a few designers, pass them your requirements, then see how much they'll do it for. I wouldn't really go for the cheapest, what you want to do is have a look at some other websites they've done.

I've got a few websites myself, and would be happy to pass the URLs to you if you're interested, if so, get in touch.

You may not need to get someone to write it for you if you can figure out the design and colour scheme - and don't just pinch someone else's, its considered unprofessional!
You need to get some books from the library about page design or graphics design and colour.
Then if you get 1&1 to host it, they'll give you the software for free.

Here are some web resources.

Domain name: $20/year.
Hosting: $5-10/month
Someone to Design + Build: $400-4,000 depending on what you want. If you just want static presence, then its probably round 400 or less.

I would suggest something "all-in-one" like Go Daddy that helps you with your domain name and your website. If you're doing this on your own, you'll want services like site templates and easy to install programs like picture galleries and stuff.

Unfortunately, sites like Go Daddy has LOTS of advertising that you need to wade through. You can try Fat Cow too where less advertising = less templates and functionality.

The easiest for starting a business that you want to be sucessful would be BlueVoda. They have a website builder that is all drag and drop and couldnt be easier. The only bad thing is you have to use there hosting.

Try GeoCities on Yahoo. You can do everything yourself and it's really easy.
