'transsexual' is a person who belongs to one gender but wishes to be perceived as a person of the opposite one. the individual achieves this either by undergoing a sex-change procedure or by dressing up as a member of the opposite sex.

Wow...now that I look at Jamie Lee Curtis...makes one wonder! That's just the perfect name for a baby whose gender the doctors are unsure of, too!

I recently did a paper on Transexuals, and what I realized is that aside from an inborn feeling that they're either a boy/man trapped in a girl's/woman's body or vica verca, they're pretty much like anyone else.

We all have issues. Theirs just come across as "strange" to a lot of people. We should be more accepting as eachother, because the world would be a better place if we didn't make it hard for eachother!

Wrong-o, Georgia, though a common misconception. You're thinking of a 'transvestite'.

A transsexual, on the other hand, is a person whose genetic composition and physiology are not the same. One rather famous one is Jamie Lee Curtis, who is genetically male and physically female; though very few are so fortunate as to be able to reconcile their oppositions.

Most transsexuals have very difficult lives because their mental ane emotional states cannot reconcile themselves with their physiology, and many of these seek corrective surgery; 'pre-op' refers to those planning towards this surgery, while 'post-op' refers to those who have already completed the surgery. There are also 'non-op' transsexuals who can find peace by living in their preferred roles without the surgery.

Female-to-male transsexuals usually 'fly beneath the radar' of most social persecutions due to the fact that society readily accepts an apparent female dressing and behaving as a male. Sadly, the reverse is seldom true; male-to-female transsexuals are often harrassed, unfairly discriminated against (employment, housing, patronage, etc), assaulted, and even killed for 'daring' to dress and act in accordance with their genetic profile.

Funny how readily everyone has come to accept people with all variants of anomalies (ie - physical or mental anomalies, Down's Syndrome, amputees, etc) but someone who is 'normal' apart from the difference between their perceived gender and their true gender is socially persecuted.
