So, was it a good call on the part of the ref during the Italy/Aus game?

A penalty kick is awarded against a team that commits one of the ten offences for which a direct free kick is awarded, inside its own penalty area and while the ball is in play.

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following six offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
* kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
* trips or attempts to trip an opponent
* jumps at an opponent
* charges an opponent
* strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
* pushes an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player
commits any of the following four offences:
* tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball, making contact with the opponent before touching the ball
* holds an opponent
* spits at an opponent
* handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area).

*********NOTE: I put in all this detail because there are offences which do not result in a direct free kick, they result in an INDIRECT free kick meaning the ball much touch or be touched by two people (from either team) before entering the goal to be counted as a goal. So, the comments saying "A foul in the box" results in a penalty kick are incorrect. For instance, call against a defender for dangerous play would never result in a penalty kick.

A foul in the penalty box warrants a penalty kick. It usually has to be a bad tackle or pulling of the shirt or something pretty bad. Unfortunately football players are among the best actors and can get a penalty for a stupid tackle if they act hurt and the referee buys it.

When the wife throws out your entire collection of Playboy from 1963 to the present. That merits a good, hard penalty kick if you ask me!
