It was a dark and stormy night, this is a famous first line, because of the book it begins, the author who wrote it and also the fact that it is one of the worst opening lines in all literature. The standard advice is to write any true statement and build the story from there, but the statement does not have to even be true really. do you have any ideas about what kind of a story, maybe a romance, or a mystery, a thriller adventure, a chiller, a true confessions, or something else, maybe a serious comedy. How about when, past future present, Journalism, historical, fictional? just start to put down the parameters of what the story should be like, and the plot line should almost automatically follow out of that. when the basic characters start to fill in because the must fit the events that the plot demands the dialogue will be easier to create for your characters.I know nothing about writing but these are standard suggestions! If any of them help let me Know and maybe we can create a How to overcome writers block book and both get richer

When I have writers block I usually write down a word, any word, sometimes even the word "write".

Then I think of something really really sad. I try then to think of a color (not blue, but I suppose if you wanted it could be blue), to relate to the word and the emotion to. Usually after focusing on this for about 10-15 minutes, the most random things pop up in my head.

You have to start somewhere. Think of a plot or some interesting characters. Read a history book and put your characters in a specific era such as the Civil War or The French Revolution.

Try making a list of words and forcing yourself to write a short story using all of them.
