My best friend tells me that sometimes she dreams about having sex, but she knows she totally isn't ready. Is this unnatural? She is 12.

Additional: She doesn't WANT to have sex with anyone. She knows she doesn't want a kid and that she is too young. She also has learned about consequences from her teachers and her parents.

She told me that no one is pressuring her to do it with her. She knows how to protect herself from weird people that would (never have) pressured her about that type of thing.

No, that's totally natural and normal. I'm glad to hear that she knows she's not ready for it yet though.

This can be natural because some people may feel that sooner than others. She needs to know about the complications of sex just because she is 12 does not mean she can not get pregnent or AIDS and all sorts of diseases condoms do not prevent from. Let her know these things talk to her you seem like a good friend and believe me she does not want to deal with kids at this age my sister had a first child at 14. No one can stop her you can only try to educate her on these things so maybe she can change her mind and think before acting. It can also mean someone may be presuring her to have sex so tell her not to give in because bieng stuck with a child or a disease is not worth the risk. Wait til you are much older so you know how to protect your selves.

That old pituitary gland in our head really messes with us doesn't it? Sends messages that have our hormones really cutting up. It's natural that your friend would dream about sex and you're right - and she's right - she is NOT READY. There's nothing "unnatural" about it. God placed those in us so that we would be attracted to one another (male and female) and create the desire so that we can continue to multiply the world. However, young people must have parents to talk with, to help them understand what language their body is speaking, and how they must speak back- loudly and continously ! If she's not able to talk with her parents, a guidance counselor, youth pastor, best friend or other family member should be able to help. Keep the lines of communication open - you want to make sure that your folks can always trust you. Oh, by the way, you must be a good friend for her to confide in you....

No, it is not unnatural at all. In fact, it is very natural. Tell your friend not to worry about it at all. There are some psychologists who would say it is very healthy.

And she is very mature to realize that she's not ready to have sex.
