Middle school is challenging in so many ways.
Of course, academically, there is more required and expected of middle school students than what was required in the earlier grades. Students can deal with more complex thinking at this age in math, philosophy, science, and the languages.
There is more preparation and time required at home for homework assignments, and longer term assignments, too, so students have to begin to be able to explore time management to be successful. Organization will become more of a priority at the middle school level. There is also the sense of preparing oneself for high school level, where the grades count and everything is viewed with an eye to the future.
But the larger challenge is social - some people have a difficult time feeling like they fit in, since peer groups are so important at this age. Add to this the physical development of puberty's arrival, with its attendent hormonal moodiness and internal voice constantly questioning "am I normal?" , "who am I?", "what is important to me?", and you've got some major issues to handle.
It's a time of growing up, shifting of priorities, being able to handle more complex topics, and finding oneself.
So I would say it is challenging, but also exhilarating time that will make a lifelong impression.

As in any school or class, it depends on the local school system or the individual teachers. In today's would of No Child Left Behind, all schools are being graded on their success in teaching state/federal standards. Having said that, some teachers are demanding and even cruel, others are not. My advice is to talk to others who have been to the school and had the specific teachers. As a teacher I do not believe in busy work. If I give an assignment, it is not just time consuming, it has a purpose. For example, a teacher can give 10 math problems and know if a student understands. Doing 40 or 50 problems is not going to "miraculously" teach a concept a child does not know. They won't know any more on #35 than they did at #1 if they don't get it.

when I was a kid in middle school I don't recall it being a challenge with learning, it wasn't hard at all. The challenge was being in school all day like prison and not getting to go outside and some fresh air during lunch, and everyone trying to be cool and in the clicks was the challenge

As any glance into a middle school yearbook can prove, middle school is an ugly time with ugly people. I just mean that mentally, physically and emotionally, the entire person is in flux (think of it as the cocoon stage between caterpillar and butterfly), and so most adults look back at pictures of themselves in middle school and cringe. My experience with middle school students was that they can be your best friend one day and steal your wallet the next and not be able to explain why they acted the way they did on either day.

Yes, middle school is challenging. It challenges the students to learn all that they are able to and absorb it. It is tougher today than when I was in middle school, from what I am told. More is expected of today's students, particularly in light of all the new standardized testing laws.

Middle School wasn't too bad, but you have to be prepared for classes to become a bit more challenging then before. Say goodbye to cute Christmas projects and hello to real book reports. It really isn't too bad, so don't get too worked up about it. The social structures will change though, and it will become a bit more ruthless. Just be prepared for cliques to be formed. Good luck!

Depends on the Middle School. The hardest thing about Middle School is getting older. You'll get used to that too.

depending onhow well you learn from books. I was a hands on learner and felt stupid in jr and sr high school. Yet people i know who are able to catch on easily found jr and sr high to easy and had to ask teachers help to get challenged or to pass out of 1 class and go to the next level
