I asked a recruiter for a salary range for a position they are considering me for, and the reply was "DOE" - any idea how to translate that?

The "D.O.E." means Depending on Experience.
In essence, this translates to - the more experience you have, the more they will be willing to pay. Mind you, "experience" does NOT have to be actual job experience, - which is the mistake most people make. Example, if you are wanting to work in a job for a newspaper agency. Maybe this is your first job. You can overcome that "D.O.E.", - - if you worked on your high school newspaper - you can certainly claim that as legitimate experience.
I was hired over someone who had worked for the targted employer for 2 summers, and I had no actual experience. I applied that I mentioned above, i.e. I had reviewed paperwork in the same field, (accidents), then when they asked me questions, I had the right answewrs. Viola! I was hired!
The thing to remember is NEVER sell yourself short.
Good luck.
