I believe you may be referring to War of the Worlds. It was out in the 80's. The first season is available on disk (i got it from eBay for a really good price) and the second season is rumoured to be coming out some time later this year.

I wish I knew cuz it sounds interesting. Are you sure you're not talking about the War of the Worlds series from the 80s? Or V from the 80s, perhaps?
