most minnow traps are basically a container made of mesh or screen, with a cone of mesh or screen on one end. The narrow end of the cone sticks into the container. You put some bait inside the trap and drop it in the water. The fish swim in the cone and into the trap, but have a hard time finding their way back out.

Put bait in the thing (bread works), drop it in the water, and come back tomorrow to see what you caught.
