when your computer says it is connected at 100.0 mb/s it means the connection between your computer via cat5 to your cable modem/dsl modem or router etc.. is at 100 megabits a second. 100 megabits is equal to 12.5 megabytes / second
anything with a little b is bits and with a big B is bytes for example

Network connections are measured in megaBITS per second, NOT MegaBYTES per second.
Mb = Megabits
MB = Megabytes
100 Megabits = 12.5 Megabytes (8 bits to a byte).
Then you have to factor in overhead of the transmisssion, yoou usually see about 10-11 MB total through put. However, hard disk performance and other issues can affect actual throughput as well.

Those speeds are what your interfaces are capable of doing. Not that your internet would ever be that speed. However, transferring data between 2 computers on the LAN side, the slowest speed will be the actual transfer speed. It's like having a 6 inch water pipe (Network card) - it can carry a lot of water, but if you simply put your garden hose into it (Internet connection), that's the most water you will get through it..

That doesn't convert to megabytes, that is megabytes.
100 megabytes per second.
If you want to break it down even further, there are 1024 bytes in a megabyte, so that is 102400 bytes per second.
Of course you can keep converting it to kilobytes, etc. But that's just kinda redundant.

mbps = megabytes per second. thats the speed of transfer for your network. its not how fast your internet connection is.
