Putting ads out is okay, but first you need to take a first aid course, to make sure you're equipped to handle emergencies. Check with your local Red Cross or hospital to see when they have classes. Once you're certified, tell your friends & family that you need the practice & experience and would appreciate them giving you a chance next time they need a sitter. In some locations, you might need to be registered too, so check with your city's or county's regulations. Then, all you can do is just put the word out. Once you get a few jobs, see if they will give you some references for when you babysit for others. If they've had a good experience with you as their sitter, they won't mind giving you a good reference. You can also use these references for other jobs (ask them first, before using them in any reference situation), including fast foods, housekeeping and other jobs, whether temporary or permanent. So, doing a good job when you're a teen is very important for any job you'll be applying for in the future. Also, when getting prepared for babysitting, make sure you have a babysitter bag, outfitted with things that will help you make your job easier (like games, coloring books, crayons, activity books and other such non-food items). This will show your "employers" that you take your job seriously, and won't just park yourself in front of the tube and let the kids run wild. Maybe even include a few parent-approved videos that their kids haven't seen before (ask them ahead of time). Once news of your "services" gets out, you'll have plenty of businsess. This is how my daughter got her "business" off the ground, and she was in high demand. Hope you do well. <*)))><

Gosh, do you live near me? :)
Make up a flier stating your training and experience, what neighborhoods you can work in, and whether you have or require transportation. At the bottom, make tear-off tabs with your first name and phone number. Put up a copy of your flier on the bulletin board at local churches, the local Elementary school, the local YMCA or youth center, local day care centers or preschools, or where your mom and/or dad work. Aviod putting them up in grocery stores or advertising in the paper.
The best people to work for are people your parents know.
When you get a call, ask to meet the parents and kids before you babysit, even if it's just for a while before the parents leave. You can even volunteer to sit for a half hour while they get ready at no charge. That will give the parents an opportunity to see you with the kids, so they'll trust you, and you'll get a chance to learn where everything is.

After you've taken the course make up fliers stating your name, phone number, the hour's and days you can babysit, your rates and to make you look good the course you took. After that put them in neighbors mailboxes, and ask to put them up at local stores. another thing parents like is to have a card or something that they can carry with them, or put on the fridge. After you've got your first job ask for a time to come over A few days ahead to meet the parents and kids so you will know them. On the day you come wear nice clothes and act confident. If you wear good clothing parents know you are taking the job seriously, and when you are confident the parents are more comfterable leaving their kids with you. There are alot of problem's when babysitting that could arise. one of the most common is seperation anxiety. A good thing you can do is decorate a box or small suitcase and put some of your old toys and games in there. They are old to you but new to the children. If you've brought it then have the parents start an activity like a game, or a movie then have the parents casually say goodbye. You can also make it a point to say see you later so the kids know they're coming back. Another fun thing you can do is let the kids build a fort using a couple of chairs and blankets. For a special treat let the kids have a snack in the fort. For snacks you can do ants on a log by washing and then cutting them into peices about an inch long. then put cream cheese or peanut butter in the middle of them and put ant's ( raisins on the logs. You can also do monster toast. Toast some bread then butter it, mix some food coloring with milk use a Q-tip to make faces on the bread. Another hard thing to do is to get them to take baths. I give them different time intervals. and bring special water toys for bathtime. bedtime is also hard. i pretend that we are bears going up to our cave. After the kids are asleep clean up any messes even if they were there before yuo came. Parents like to come home to a clean house. Parents also like if you tell them the cute things their kids said and did. It tells them you like and pay attention to their kids. Hope I helped.

If you belong to a church, get the word out at your church that you are going to start babysitting. Ask your firends to spread the word- aks you parents to spread the word. You could make posters or flyers. I would also recommend that if it is available to you and you haven't already, take a babysitting class (offered through the Red Cross I believe) and take CPR classes. You will be more likely to get parents to hire you if you have skills that will help save a child in case of an emergency - it will make parents feel more at ease. Good luck!

I was going to give an as shole answer but then I thought of something. Try to pick up a school directory from a local elementary school and then just telemarket. Call everyone in there and just leave a message. Even if they don't need you right then, they'll still have your name and number.

Yes make some simple flyers on your computer, include your phone number and name (of course!) and stick them in peoples mailboxes or hand them out to people at the grocery store or around the neighborhood!

People would feel more confident hiring you if you had a sheet of reference.
