hi, I'm traveling to India for the first time. My family's in Mumbai so I'll be staying with them and since they are really busy with their work, i thought i'd give myself a self-tour of Mumbai. if anyone has any suggestions as to where i should go and what i should see, i'm open to them. i'd also like to get a lot of shopping done, so if anyone knows of any nice shopping complexes, it'd be wonderful of you to let me know. a friend whose already been there said that there were many museums that are interesting. can't wait to go, thanks in advance :)

Well , as for tourist sites, there aren't many you can check out the following:
1.The Gateway of India
2.Marine Drive ---best drive in Bombay
3.Banganga--- its somewhere near altamount road..and its said that the water from the ganga flows into this place or something
4.Prince of wales Museum-- they're currently having the "eternal Gandhi" exhibition which is supposed to be very good
5.Hanging Gardens on Malabar hill
6.Chowpatty beach ....famous for kapoor's kulfi

ya thats about it...

As for shopping :
1.Artia --It a brand new mall next to Nehru Planetarium, Worli
2.Crossroads at Haji Ali
3.Phoenix Mills - its the best place to shop. you can spend the whole day here...they have more than 25 shops. about 10 restaurants, a bowling alley and 2 nightclubs....Its situated at Lower Parel
4.For street shpping you can go to Colaba Causeway... you get the cheapest DVDs(Bargain them to about Rs.250 for 3. Dont pay more!) and alot of fashion accessories, India souvenir t-shirts(the brand is called Tantra), and there's another nice shop called "Lotus" on colaba causeway where you get ethnic Indian outfits

Overall a good move to visit India.

Since it is your first trip to India, it would be better if you experience India even outside Mumbai, may be just even in Maharashtra itself where Mumbai is the capital of the state.

If you scan through Travel India Mumbai section, you will find plenty of recommendations for Mumbai alone. Plan your things as per your taste and time available; and have a good time in India.
