There are software applications called OCR (optical character recognition). One of the better ones is called OmniPage.

When used with a scanner, you can scan the page in the book, and the OCR software will try to read all the characters on the page and generate an editable text version on your computer. You can save this in various different text formats.

Then, you use a PDF creator, the cheapest that I know of is PDF995:

http://www.pdf995.com/

Open the pages you've saved and select [file], [print], and select the PDF option instead of a printer.

It's actually fairly simple, so don't let this summary intimidate you from giving it a whirl.

Good luck,

You have to have Adobe Acrobat Program and a scanner to do it. Open up the program and then file, create pdf and choose from scanner. Then you have to scan every page you want after which you can save it as a pdf file.

Microsoft Word or WordPerfect (recent versions) will let you save a document in PDF format, viewable by Adobe Reader.
