There are benefits and cons to both animals. I have owned many of both, plus birds, turtles, fish, rabbits, etc...

Cats
Independant
Don't need to be walked
Don't chew your shoes or furniture
- get a scratch post or they will use the furniture
- catlitter box inside the house smelly
- if they go outside and get in a fight, they can catch FIV (Feline HIV)
-aren't obediant like dogs
small enough to have in your bed
catch mice and insects
food and vet maintenance is usually cheaper
most renters will allow a cat over a dog.

Dog
lovable, likes to cuddle more than cats
-need to be walked
-more expensive to feed
no cat litter box - although potty training sucks
fun to train
can guard your house
many different sizes
are normally good with more pets
-can chew everything in your home
-expensive pet bills
hard to have in an apartment or rented home

It depends on your lifestyle and how much time you have to dedicate.

Puppys are like babies. They need a lot of attention and training time, but when they are, they are like a part of the family and very fun. Puppies are a big responsibility and are not a good pet for someone who works 9-5pm. Smaller dogs need to be walked more than large dogs because of their energy. If you don't they will get bored and trash your home. If you have children, start with a puppy so they can get used to them. Some adult dogs see children as rivals and will be jealous and can potentially hurt them. When at the pet store or do some research, find out the best breed for children.

Kittens are easier to potty train and cats are independant and don't need a lot of maintenance. If they are outdoor, you don't have to worry about a litterbox. Make sure you spay/neuter them because they have babies like crazy. Male cats will spray pee all over the walls if he isn't neutered. And be careful with male kittens. 3 out of 4 kittens will get a uterine tract infection before the age of 3 and many can die from it and there is nothing you can do. I would start off with a female kitten or an older male.

Cats are loners, they don't require your undivided attention all the time, they like to lay in your lap for a little while and then they leave. They like to be independent. You can't really teach a cat to do tricks or play games. They are very clean, when they have learned to use a cat box properly. The only destruction that they may cause is sharpening their nails on your furniture, and knocking stuff off of counters and stuff. Dogs want to be around you all the time, they want your undivided attention, they usually require baths every month or so if you keep them inside. They chew things up as a puppy, like your shoes, your coffee table, whatever they can get their little teeth on. You have to potty train them, which usually can take a day or 2 months, depending ont he dog and how soon they get the concept. But they like to sit with you, and sleep with you, they greet you at the door when you've been gone, and they are usually in tune with your feelings and will comfort you when you are sad. They like to play, and go for walks, and drive in the car, and go camping and swimming, dogs are kind of like having a little brother around for a decade or so.

The dog is a mammal in the order Carnivora. Dogs were first domesticated from wolves less than 15,000 years ago according to BBC news[1], or perhaps as early as 100,000 years ago based upon recent genetic fossil and DNA evidence [2][3]. In this time, the dog has developed into hundreds of breeds with a great degree of variation. For example, heights at the withers range from just a few inches (such as the Chihuahua) to roughly three feet (such as the Irish Wolfhound), and colours range from white to black, with reds, greys (usually called blue), and browns occurring in a tremendous variation of patterns.

The cat, also called the domestic cat or house cat, is a small carnivorous mammal of the subspecies Felis silvestris catus. Its most immediate pre-domestication ancestor is believed to be the African wild cat, Felis silvestris lybica. The cat has been living in close association with humans for somewhere between 3,500 and 8,000 years[1].

One Barks and one Meows. Seriously, dogs need more attention than cats. So how much time do you want to put into this?
