To clear a few things up, it is definitely possible to get pregnant while you are on your period. Sperm can live inside you for several days so if you ovulate right after your period, the egg will get fertilized by the sperm that is in there. As for why you get hornier, it could be hormones or an extra rush of blood to that general region, I'm not sure. Just make sure you use protection because pregnancy IS possible.

To clear up a couple things...
First, there is zero possibility of you getting pregnant when you have your period! You get your period because the egg that was released from your ovary DID NOT get fertilized and therefore the increase in your uterine lining isn't necessary and it is discarded. (not saying you don't need to use protection for other reasons like STDs, you can still get them while you have your period.)
Second, I agree that hormones are a big cause of arousal during period time. But I think it's more than that. I think the increased blood impacts nerve endings as well. I think age has something to do with it too. Because now--in my 30's it is nowhere near as appealing as when I was in my late teens and 20's.

According to what I cite below, women feel hornier at two times:
at ovulation, they feel passive, loving and receptive;
at bleeding time, they feel aggressive and more dominating and sadistic.
