We are trying to set up a free, peaceful, and stable government with the hope that, in time, it may spread to surrounding countries (Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan) thereby reducing the threat that eminates from the region. Short answer.

The current government has decided three things:
1. The American way is the "moral right" of everyone on the planet, and as such they have the responsibility to export it to countries where the governments don't do it "our" way. (Of course, they will only bother if the country who is to be the recipient of our benificence has something we want, like oil.) The Sudan/Darfur doesn't get the same treatment, you'll notice.
2. Anytime another government disagrees with the US, we have the right to go kick their butts, and say it's to prevent them from trying to hit us first. This is called a "preemptive strike." So, if this logic follows, any other country who believes the US is going to come after them has every right to attack the US' interests first. Unfortunately the present administration doesn't see that this arguement follows logically.
3. Anytime the present administration "decides" it is right, anyone who disagrees with them is either a treasonous peasant, or actually a part of the enemy. As such, they can kill you or jail you without due process if they choose, because they are right, and YOU are wrong....
We are at war because we are upholding Bush's, I mean, the US' right, to the above. Got it?

Despite the repeated claims that this war is for merely oil, it may be that this war was merely to establish a permanent US military presence in a puppet state, so that domination of the entire region might be affected. So, yes, it may be for oil, but not just Iraqi oil; this is for control of oil throughout the entire region.
As to when our involvement will end, it is unlikely that the US will withdraw until we have found alternative methods of supplying our energy needs. Permanent bases are highly probable at this point. On the other hand, the US might pull out if the economic and political consequences of this conflict make the cost of maintaining a prescence in Iraq too high.

we are never coming home that why they are building 12 big bases there. They are building the biggest American embassy in the world in Iraq. The point of going into Iraq was not to get out it was to stay in. There is a lot of money to be made in all the chaos and destruction. You cant think about this in right or wrong fashion. This is about money, everything is about money, money is everything. Nothing happens in this world without money and a deal. Just keep that into prospective. They do not care about the same things you do none of them Dems or Rep. I will say that the Dems are the lesser of the two evils but in the global economy it is cash that makes the world go round. If you don't understand that you will never understand why we went into the middle east.

First off we are no longer currently "at War," we won the war when Bagdhad fell and then we captured Saddam.
We are currently staying in Iraq as requested by their fledgling government as protection while they rebuild their military and police forces. Currently 75% of the country is considered stable. The insurgents are coming in from other Muslim countries to disrupt the formation of the new Democratic government - one which will disrupt the balance of sexist hierarchies in the Middle East. To leave before the government has stablized would mean more bloodshed in future years.

Edit: In the midst of an Oil shortage - how can some of you be dumb enough to say we're there for Oil. Iraqi's not the US have control of their oil fields.

George Bush (Dick Cheney, really) and his minions want to remove the power that is controlling Iraq. And put someone of their same evil world conquering mindset into power. We have done this with many countries in South/Central America.
So until we have a leader in Iraq who George Bush and the United Nations agrees with (and has placed there), the war will continue.
