finally a competent topic. you are completely right. the difference to me is the rules and reactions. yes gay people get chastised and congress is going back in forth about gay marriage WHATEVER. gays still have the right to be gay to date the same sex and all this. it wasnt even up to debate whether or not blacks had rights it was universally accepted that blacks did NOT have rights. blacks couldnt vote, couldnt eat certain places couldnt go certain places. gays dont have any of this. if im wrong let me know but i dare say other than marriage gays arent really restricted from anything at all. there really is no comparison and i await the 1st person to make a case for it.

Actually I am going to buck the norm and say yes they are exactly the same in that God made you black God made me bisexual God made your friend gay. We all three have nothing to do with how God made us. And we all have the ability to control our actions. And a black woman does have more rights than a gay man. She can marry the man of her choice the gay man can not.
And to help you understand the issue from our side let me tell you what I tell every straight person who thinks God didn't make us this way.
God made you straight? OK another question, could you choose to be gay? I know you could choose to engage in a homosexual act but could you choose to be attracted to the same sex? If you can answer yes to that question then you may be gay and or bisexual and guess what God made you that way. If you honestly answer no to the question then I guess you have your answer.
Not to demean what black people have been through but I really dont see racism as running that rampent through our society. In fact I see more reverse racism than anything else.

It's not the same thing, because being gay involves someone's BEHAVIOR -- specifically, their sexual behavior.
Being black or white or whatever is not about behavior. It's something over which a person has absolutely no control -- unlike homosexuality, which as a behavior can be controlled.
Certain ethnic groups are more prone to certain diseases -- blacks are more prone to sickle cell anemia, for instance -- but it's just genetics. There's not much that can be done about it.
Gays are more prone to certain diseases too -- but these diseases are entirely the results of their BEHAVIOR, not their orientation.
Nobody gets AIDS or HPV or hepatitis or anal cancer simply by having a homosexual ORIENTATION. Only when they ACT on these urges does the likelihood of getting these diseases goes through the roof.

some of their experiences is the same...does not mean they share the same culture......discrimination is about putting someone down ..oppressing the right of others under the same law. Instead of seeing as a form of competition about who got it worst or who deserve more sympathy...why not fight any form of discriminations?!! This is what happen when Hitler rised to power too few people responded too late, cause everyone said it's not my problem!! So it's okay for the bigots to trampled on gay and lesbians while the blacks look on and while the gay and lesbian look on while the black get lynched?

Of course, there have always been gays in every gender includeing the gender that opressed black people. Im sure some of the wealthy house owners in the north with their black servants in history were very oppressed when they had to sneak away from their wife and family home to have their homosexual relations. Also homosexuality can be hidden, the greeks in ancient history for example all had wife and kids despite haveing homosexual relations on the side.

No, they're not the same thing. But there are some similarities in the polical and social treatment that the two groups endure. The major difference I see is that it's (usually) difficult to hide your ethicity, but many gay people can easily hide their sexual identity. Some can't though. But in both cases, you are born that way, and society has its own restrictions about your role in mainstream society - and you will fight against that whether you want to or not.

They aren't exactly the same, but there are some parallels, just like there are between black folks and other minorities.
It's not just about gay marriage, gays like black people get harassed, beaten, and killed for being who they are. It's only been a few years since Matthew Shepard was dragged behind a truck and murdered for being gay.

It is not even close to the same, I agree. It is, however, similar in that they are both oppressed minority groups. The gay community, like latinos, have used the path created by blacks with the Civil Rights Movement in gaining rights and fighting their oppressors. That is maybe why your gay friend compares their struggle with blacks.

hey,
there are two answers to that.
The first is that the people to survey on this question are gay black men -- I know quite a few -- it might be worth asking them what they think -- does that seem logical?
The second is that it seems to me that you are primarily concerned, as you have evidenced before, with figuring out who has been more mistreated, black or gay people. By white straight people, I think blacks have been more mistreated. By religious people from conservative backgrounds, I think gays have been more mistreated. However, the problem is (I'm trying different words) that people have been mistreated.
Blacks have been slaughtered by whites. Gays have been slaughtered by straights. Some cultures have been accepting of blacks. Some cultures have been accepting of gays. Clearly race is determined by genetics, increasingly it appears that homosexuality is determined by genetics (I've given the links to you before I think, but I'd be glad to do it again). People are afraid of blacks. People are afraid of gays. White people think that black men are going to take their wives. Straight people think gay people are going to take their spouses.
You've heard all this, so have I. I think prejudice just has to end. I've worked to help end it for my whole life to date, got another 30 or 40 years to work at it.
For me, I'll just keep working. Beyond knowing that its all wrong, I don't need to know more.

Reynolds Jones

No. Even though you're born black and your born gay, you can decide to act on your homosexuality but you can't decide not to be black.
