If you go to the nearest main post office with your ID, they should offer a document check service. I did this with mine, paid £7 they checked my birth cert etc. stamped my form and sent it off. Less than a fortnight later it arrived.
Worth a try.

The website says it takes up to 8 weeks but, I just received my passport and it took 3 months. You can pay an additional fee to receive it faster. It is easier to plan ahead of time.

it depends how many immigrants and asylum seekers are being processed... there is a policy of making nationals wait whilst backlogs of these are processed.
remember the long wait of about 4-5 summers ago?

I got mine back in a little over a week but it can take much longer so don't be tempted to book your holiday without one just in case
