During a ride in late February 2003, I started hearing popping and snapping noises coming from the rear axle of the Jeep under torque reversals at first, but later whenever a turn was made. This problem has been going on for almost 4 years, does anyone have any advice?

The popping your hearing during torque reversal is probably just pinion gear backlash in the diff -- not a big deal by itself. However, the noise you hear when turning, is most likely the Trak-Lock clutchs inside your differential. My first question would be, "When is the last time you changed your rear diff oil?" That's the first step I would take. Keep in mind, the oil in your Wrangler's rear end needs a limited slip friction modifier added to it to help eliminate the very problem your describing. If you don't already know what I'm talking about, it's best that you take it to a qualified mechanic for servicing --- read ,, a cover off servicing where the diff can be inspected. 90% of the time, popping during turning, in the rear diff, can be corrected just by servicing with the proper oil and additive. Hope this helps. --- In case your wondering, I'm a Chrysler certified Master tech -- specializing in drivetrain problems.

My first best advice would be to check out the rear differential. I doubt it's a U-Joint because if this has been going on for 4 years...if it were a U Joint, it would have broken by now. I'd be surprised if that was it. Doesn't hurt to inspect them though, plus the drive shaft.

My question is, why have you waited 4 years to do anything about it? You may have done irreparable damage to the rear end by now. Why would you just continue to drive it knowing there's a problem?

The solution will likely be found by checking the condition of the rear differential, and while you're at it, I'd run through the rest of the drive train from the transmission on back, just to be on the safe side. Also inspect your rear wheels and brakes.

Hope this helped a little.

most likely you have a cvjoint going bad or is probobly already bad and needs replacing look on the shaft where there is a rubber boot should be about 4inches from the hub where your wheel is there is one at all four wheels. look to see if it has a split in it and there will lots of greese everywhere.
