How do they work? Do they really work or are they a just a piece of paper? I am trying to help someone who is in an abusive relationship....if her husband is violent to the point she is scared for her life, would a restraining order really help her?

One thing I did not mention is that they have a child together. How will this all work during a divorce? Will he have visitation rights? I wish I could help her more but, I just don't know all of the facts...

A restraining order is a step in the right direction. A restraining order sets precident that there is a need for protection. The victim of a restraining order needs to show proof, what would be better would be what is called an "Order For Protection", or an OFP.
An OFP is easier for a woman to get in any state, as it is pertaining to fear from a spouse, or someone who is partnered with an indivdual.
An OFP will allow the partner who is in fear the opportunity to live life without fear, with an OFP if your girlfriend is at a club or an ice cream shop, she can call if she see's the Boy Friend there, and he would have to leave.
If he does not leave, he would go to jail.

The restraining order only helps if the authorities enforce and act upon an infraction. The authorities do not guard a person 100% of the time because, they do not know who each parties that are involved. They only come into play if the wife, in this case, notifies them of the order and what the history of the husband's abusiveness is. It is a sad day when it comes to having to use a restraining order. He will more than likely be very angry when it is served on him, but, she needs to stick to her guns and not give in to him. She will need a lot of support from friends and family.

yes they do - you just have to make sure you have it enforced. if he violates it - in any way - report it to your lawyer and to the police. most restraining orders say he can't come with X feet of your home, and work place. they also prohibit (sp) contact from him - directly or indirectly (ppl can't call 'for' him) he can only contact through your lawyer.
this also includes internet messages.
they can work - and they provide some piece of mind.
a tip - make sure you keep a copy with you at all times - that way if you are at (example) walmart and he comes up to you - you have proof of the order.
as far as 'proof' you need the order - if you are afraid for your life - the order will be granted to you. period.

as long as the people honor them, then they work. If your friend doesn't think he will respect it though, it may be better if she looks into a a woman's shelter, where she will be a little more protected.
And she should not let her guard down when dealing with him. They apologize and promise it'll never happen again, but it usually always does and then gets worse. Best of luck to her.

She would have to have proof if she wanted to get the restraining order, and no, it won't help. It doesn't help from the time he gets to her until the cops arrive (if she has time to call them). The best thing to do is not let him know where she's at.

I believe they work . unless he is crazy and doesn’t care about going to jail, but your friend should get one, and also relocated to be on the safe side and take some self defense class.
