I had really great insurance both times I was pregnant, so the only thing I paid for each pregnancy was one $15.00 office visit copay (paid to the OB's office after the baby was born). Not one copay per visit, but one copay TOTAL for the entire 9 months. As for the labor and delivery, with my first son, it was about $16,000, covered by insurance 100%, no complications. Second son was c-section, and also covered by insurance 100%, about $18,000.
Pregnancy is NOT a preexisting condition, and any Human Resources person, insurance company representative or anyone else who tells you that is lying. It's a federal law...you can not exclude a pregnant woman or charge her higher rates for being pregnant.

My OB charges 1200 for the regular vaginal delivery, no complications. That includes office visits. Then there's anestesia, the hospital room, any medication the hospital gives you, the cost of stitches if she tears, etc... It can get up around 20k with out complications.
But what are you going to do if she goes into labor at 25 weeks, instead of 40 weeks, and the baby has to stay in the NICU for 3 months, or longer. The NICU is 800 per day at least, and that's not including doctors, medications, breathing treatments, sedation.
Never, never assume that just because your wife is healthy that a pregnancy wouldn't have complications.

I don't remember all the charges, but I do know they rack up fast. You never know what kind of tests you may end up needing. There are many visits to the clinic during pregnancy, many blood tests, ultrasounds and all that before the hospital bills come in. Some insurance companies won't cover pregnancy until you have had the policy for up to six months. You should start checking now. Good prenatal care is important.

yes, it is covered under insurance. i am not sure on how much each of my doctor's visits were but i do remember the total cost of my 36 hours in the hospital was slightly over $8,000. that is before the insurance though.

I think it is a pre-existing condition. If you are worried about the cost of doctor/hospital visits ( and they are pretty expensive-it depends on the doctor) you can have her apply for Medicaid.
