If you are wanting to stay on site, definitely a travel agent. In my experience I have booked directly with Disney (can be a nightmare with problems and such) AAA (basically took care of everything myself), had friends try other sites like Expedia, Priceline or Costco (they ended up have big problems with their trips) and then with my current travel agent. Never had a problem with my agent, she gets the same prices as Disney, but she makes sure I have the current lowest rate/promotion, or changes it once the new promotions come out. Any questions or anything I have are taken care of.
I would never book a trip without an agent and I travel all the time and know quiet a bit about Disney. It just is a comforting feeling to know someone is there to help if I need it.

I go all the time. The cheapest two places to get tickets are AAA or on a military base. So, clearly, you either have to have a AAA membership or be in the military. Otherwise, yes...Wal-Mart, Costco, etc. may be your second best bet. Lastly, if you're getting seven days of park hopper passes...it's cheaper to get them through Disney.
