I think I can provide some real insight into answering this question because I'm not only a nationally certified Tennis Instructor, but I also used to be a tennis Umpire, and have had conversations with many of the TV tennis commentators and players.

Here are my tastes in reverse order.

4. Cliff Drysdale - Cliff is knowledgeable and nice, but provides too little information.

3. Patrick McEnroe - Patrick is much more knowledgeable, and provides just the right amount of information. Unfortunately, Patrick isn't the nicest person (especially towards Cliff), and his information is too often incorrect.

2. John McEnroe - John is extremely knowledgeable, provides the right amount of information, is much nicer, more endearing, and more often right than his sometimes nasty brother Patrick.

1. Mary Carillo - Mary is best because she has just the right balance of knowledge and personality. In fact, I consider her the Roger Federer of TV commentators because she has an all-around style just like Roger.

The world would do well to copy Mary and Roger.

The moral of the story is: Avoid developing yourself, in whatever the arena, in lopsided fashion. Don't just polish your strengths, work on your weaknesses, too. Strive to have an all-around style.

Remember, you're only as strong as your weakest link.

Patrick MacEnroe is quite good as far as information goes and his brother obviously has the personality to make someone want to listen to him talk for an entire match. The women don't seem to be very good most of the time I wonder why they've said the same thing 20 times in 20 minutes it seems. I think Luke Jensen could be good if they stopped putting him at courtside where he can only talk once in a while in a whisper. Back when he played I used to watch some matches for charity where him and his brother had microphones on and were commentating their own match and Luke seems really fun and smart about tennis.

I would say Cliff Drysdale and Mary Carillo. Fred Stolle used to be good too. I really liked the banter between him and Drysdale.
