She "goes with" boys,
She could flirt with all the guys,
smile at them and bat her eyes,
press against them when they dance,
make them think they stand a chance,
then refuse to see it through,
She could stay home every night,
wait around for Mr. Right,
take cold showers every day
and throw her life away
on a dream that won't come true,
She could hurt someone like her,
out of spite or jealousy,
... but none of that is as bad as expressing her true emotions in front of this beau of hers? I don't get it. What does she mean? Or what did the songwriter mean?

Well she is singing it about the people in school who are making fun of her. She wants to appear as if she doesn't care what they think and so the worst thing she could do is cry in front of them because this would show that they have got to her and that she is unhappy. She doesn't want them to think she is affected by their mocking.

I think it means that everyone sees her as this tough girl. Nothing phases her. So to cry would be to ruin that whole image that she has built up around her and let everyone down. people won't respect her as much as the once did because once she cries, that mask falls down and everyone sees her as a plain human being like them and not this tough idol figure.

The "fronting" of the tough girl on the outside.... clashing with the emotional needs of the "sweet" girls inside. She couldn't possibly let that show.

Pride and image. She is supposed to be a tough girl - strong and independent...can't let those people know her true emotions.

she's afraid of love and to have a real guy care about her! She's used to acting tough and being in control. If she cries in front of the guy she loves, she would be her real self and she is afraid because she is afraid of really loving someone.

She was kind'a macho like and the others looked up to her. She had to be tougher....and not let those feelings show in front of anyone.
