I live in a rural area and am not near a vet. I do not own a gun. My rabbit is very sick and is in alot of pain. It is time for me to put her down. What would be the most humane way to do this?

A hard blow to the back of the neck. It's not an easy thing to do putting them down.

There's also several websites about slaughtering rabbits (you don't have to dress yours out but it effectively puts them out).

Cervical dislocation, its fast and painless. Take the rabbit and sit it on the floor with a nice treat. Take a broomstick and sit it on the back of its neck, in a very fast motion you need to grab the hind legs and step on the broom stick and pull the rabbits legs up until you can feel the neck dislocate. If you do it correctly and fast enough they feel no pain. Their muscles will spasm but thats normal.
That is how we put down all our rabbits.

Taking it to the vet might be the easiest way on you, but if you can't, some of the other posters had good suggestions (NOT the rat posion one, though).

And just as an FYI, the USDA lists cervical dislocation and blunt trauma to the head as humane methods.

I agree with all the other folks who say that rat poison is a BAD IDEA. whoever suggested that knows little or nothing about animals.

A fast, hard blow to the head will cause instant unconciousness and death. but i understand how hard that would be for you to do that to your own pet, so try to get someone else to do it for you. Someone else who is not as emotionally attached will probably be better able to do it quickly and correctly.

sorry to hear about your rabbit, but remember there is nothing wrong with ending your rabbit's suffering. just do your best to do it humanely. *best wishes*

I am training to become a vet, rabbit poison is so not the way to go, it is a slow, very painfull death. the best way to put it to final rest, is to take the time to drive to a vet. what is wrong with your rabbit? i would come buy, but i am not certified to operate on living things yet. i feel terrable for your bunny, but take him to a good reputation vet, he will give it some anestesia then he will inject it with the killing syrum. this causes no pain and will not traumatise your little friend before he is put down. i hope everything works out.
good luck,

i would go to a vet to do it, but some people can't afford that. If you can't the best way is using a freezer. It's the least painful way. They go numb, fall asleep and gently pass.

Hold it by its' back feet and hit it on the head with a baseball bat or a club. It doesn't sound very nice but it only hurts them for about a few seconds, then they die...

The most humane is to get in your car and drive to the vet so they can put her to sleep, or find a neighbor that has a gun. You owe it to your pet!!!!!!!!!!
Please don't listen to Blondie. That's a horrible way for something to die.
Sorry about your bunny :(

Okay, very sorry about the poison thing. I did a little research, so I would suggest killing it while its asleep.
