I started out using wooden balls, but I realize they have to be painted and I am not a painter. I thought about stockings. What else is there?

a stocking is good
also nylon stockings doubled...filled with stuffing..also try the craft store for eyes which can be sewn on...

I once saw someone sculpt old people's faces out of apples. Also, you could use sculpey clay. You could even use ping pong balls, but you would still have to paint it. ( by the way, the apples were left to dry after the face was sculpted in. this created the wrinkles.)
