to multiply (x+3)(x+2) using FOIL you would:
F....(first)..... Take the first terms of the two factors, in this case, x and x, and multiply to get x^2

O... (outside).... Take the outer terms of the factors, x and 2, and multiply to get 2x

I... (inside)... Take the inner terms of the factors, 3 and x, and multiply to get 3x

L... (last)... Take the last terms of the factors, in this case 3 and 2, and multiply to get 6

Then you add up all these terms together

x^2 + 2x + 3x + 6

combine like terms to get x^2 + 5x + 6

Then you can plug in x = 1 to get
(1)^2 + 5(1) + 6
1 + 5 + 6

If you have more than 2 terms you just continue to multiply like above, where you systematically multiply each term in the first factor by each term of the second factor.

You would use FOIL if you didn't know what x was, but since in this case you already know what x is, you can substitute in directly and multiply, as everybody seems to have done above...
