He moved out here to be with me, and it isn't working for me. He is perfectly happy. I don't want to cause unnesessary pain, but I can't go on like this either.

Two bad ways: using the line "Just be friends" and a note saying "welcome to dumpsville, population: YOU" There's no breakup that's gonna be painless for both of you. Being the dumper, and dumpee are both painful, but delaying it will only make things worse.
Tell him how you feel and be honest. Usually "gentle" methods, are only soothing for the person doing the breakup. I'd be considerate, and open to easing out gradually. Depending on the details, it can ease the transition, delay the inevitable, or give a chance for the relationship to change into something where both of you are happy.

honey first and foremost your priority should be you. There really isn't a easy way to break it off with someone. The only thing that u can really do is be honest to him and let him know that it's not working between u guys.let him know that u need space right now. u can't predict the future and there might be something later on. Being seperated might give u a change of mind. it might even make your heart grow fonder for him tell him that. Always remember to behomest with yourself don't stay w/him just to keep him happy u could be missing out on something great if u do.

to hang on and not tell him will make the pain worse for him, the only way to do it is to be honest and as direct as you can, you are going to cause him pain, but you have to take responsibility for that and face it .If you carry on you're not only being unfair to him but to yourself aswell ,everyone deserves a chance at happiness and if you cant find it together you have to move on. There is no kind way to do it, be direct and to the point even though it will hurt, you cant leave him with any false hope it will be harder in the long run.

Just tell him how you feel. Don't let not telling him go on much longer, then it will get harder. Just be honest and sincere.
