It's spyware.
Go to
www.filehippo.com
Download
AVG Anti-Virus
Spybot
AdAware
Run all three (assumes you have a Windows system and not an Apple) The site is free and so are all three of these software packages.

Hi
The problem may be a virus or spyware or both. What you want to do is go to www.download.com they have all sorts of free protection for you to use. I would suggest a few things that will save your computer and keep it up and running just fine. First download the program AVG Anti-Virus and scan your entire computer for viruses. Then remove or delete any viruses found. Next for spyware protection there are several things you may want to get. Such as Spyware Doctor. Download that and scan your entire computer for spyware. Once finished remove any harmful spyware or anything else that is harming your computer. Next for the hidden problems or excess stuff from spyware download the program Ad-aware SE Professional. Then scan with that and remove anything else it suggests. 3rd download another program titled as Trend Micro Anti-spyware that will get all the troubled things that were left behind by the programs if there are any. Finally to finish up Download Window washer. This will clean your computer. It will free up lots of space and speed up your computer performance and as well as you internet service. Once finished washing your computer should be A okay! To prevent this from happening scan with all of these programs once a week and window wash once a week to keep you PC safe, well, and running perfectly. If you have any other questions send me an email. Best Wishes

Lots of sound advice has been given about what to do AFTER your PC's been hit.... now heres some to help PREVENT that in the first place. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_security_whynot_admin.mspx?mfr=true and read it until you understand it and the implications.
Install some decent software re:anti-virus/firewall/spyware ( I use AVG, ( http://www.grisoft.com ) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com ) and currently trialing the Microsoft Defender offering ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx ) There are many more than those, all with a loyal bunch of advocates, so the question as to which is the best, or the best combination, is rather a pointless one to ask. Suffice to say any of those mentioned so far in answering your question are better than paying for something like Norton.
ADDED: if John E's a Network Admin, I'm the Queen.... Shockwave Flash is an ActiveX object...we all visit safe sites that use it...Java uses ActiveX objects.. and Microsofts own applets in XP (Media Player for example) use ActiveX.
You can safely ignore his answer.

Do you mean Active X? When you're talking about computer programs and malware (malicious software) you need to be careful to spell things exactly right; two programs or websites might have nearly the same name but one coul be safe and one could be a problem.
Active X is a tool that is owned by Microsoft. Internet Explorer is the only web browser that supports (can use) Active X, because Internet Explorer is owned by Microsoft. Many programs use Active X including Photoshop, so its not surprising if you've found it on your pc.
Active X is also used by some web designers to make parts of their websites interactive.
The problem with Active X is that if someone wants to take control of your pc they can install it when you visit a rogue website; but only if you are using Internet Explorer.
The basic rule is never to use Internet Explorer unless you know a website is safe to visit. Use Firefox or Opera instead, they don't support Active X.
I use these free security tools;
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Shields Up security site, check your firewall works
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
http://www.mozilla.com/ Firefox web browser
http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

ActiveX is a set of technologies from Microsoft that enables interactive content for the Web.
Before ActiveX, Web content was static, 2-dimensional text and graphics. With ActiveX, Web sites come alive using multimedia effects, interactive objects, and sophisticated applications that create a user experience comparable to that of high-quality CD-ROM titles. ActiveX provides the glue that ties together a wide assortment of technology uilding blocks to enable these "active" Web sites
need to be wary of ActiveX before you allow anything to run on your system - only use if you totally trust the site other wise you will be installing a running program onto to your system the could be potentially dangerous to your security and system
as above try AVG or zonelabs

the first thing to do is "dont panic" calm down
firstly ,if you dont have any anti-virus(or the one you have is out of date) go to http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html#3,and download the free(english)version of avast and install it,remember to register it before 60 days(free registration)
once you have this installed scan and if you find any viruses remove them to the virus chest(this is a isolated file on your hard drive were viruses are kept(totally safe from the rest of the operating system)
once the scan is finished take time to look at the program and familiarize yourself with the options ect
with reference to the active x ,it is best not to download anything that asks you to install axtive x,unless you know what it is and then you should make sure you scan it as soon as it is downloaded,i allowed a active x control to install ,it was java runtime but i knew the program so there was no problem
you should also install spybot to protect you from spyware, this can be downloaded from http://www.safer-networking.org/,once installed you should keep this updated on every scan and dont forget to imunize it aswell
adaware personal is another program that works well with spybot, you can download this from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,this also needs to be updated on a regular basis to give you complete protection
as long as you run these 3 programs you should have very little problems, but remember to update regular,as a out of date scanner is as much use as having no scanner at all,as new security defenitions come out every day as new viruses and spyware are discovered
good luck

firstly, being a network administrator i know a little more about security etc then all these novices. if you get active X things it means that someone has got into your computer and has installed a keystroke logger. that is a thing which logs every key you press. so it can get at your passwords etc!
i suggest you wipe your hard drive immediatly, or best option is to get a new computer!

Active X allows things to be displayed on your screen - though I can't remember how or why...
As for free virus protection:
Try
AVG or Avast
You can download either from www.download.com
