No. Alchemy was regarded as the devil's work in the middle ages up through the 17th century by Christians because it dealt with things that Christians did not understand. Christian alchemists had to work in secret so as to not be prosecuted for thier practice.

Alchemy is just the roots of the science of chemistry. If there are any Christians about who make any further assumptions about it, then they have been misinformed.

Alchemy has nothing more to do with the devil than does playing a good blues guitar mean having to sell ones soul at the crossroads. Although, I have personaly been told by more than one Christian that the blues is the devil's music.

Oh well.

No. Alchemy is a neutral system, it's not even really magic in the commonly understood sense. Chemistry, nutritional science, aromatherapy, etc. can all fall under the umbrella term of alchemy, as can the more traditional alchemy and kitchen witchery. Sure Satanists can do it, but Alchemy was really popular in the middle ages and monks were really into it.

It wasn't just about turning substances into gold, it was about studying the nature of substances, discovering how they could affect other substances and people, and ultimately transmutation, not only of substances, but of the person doing the studying, because their minds would open, etc. Anything that causes you to know more about Creation glorifies the Gods, even the Christian God, since he's your creator God, isn't he?

From Wikipedia:
"Alchemy refers to both an early protoscientific and an early philosophical discipline, both combining elements of chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, semiotics, mysticism, spiritualism, and art. Alchemy has been practiced in Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persia, India, and China, in Classical Greece and Rome, in the Islamic empire, and then in Europe up to the nineteenth century — in a complex network of schools and philosophical systems spanning at least 2500 years."

So in fact, Alchemy can be classified as witchcraft or "dealing with the devil" only by a very obscurant mind. It was science.

Inform your girlfriend that King Solomon of the Bible was an alchemist, look for the Greater and lesser Keys of Solomon. Also inform her that Alchemy deals with the transmogrification of element. In other words taking an element and changing it into something else. In other words Chemistry. Without ancient alchemy we would not have aluminum, brass, bronze, her ipod, t.v, cd's ect. They were the first to experiment with the natural elements of the earth and making something out of nothing.

No devil. Just early science.

Early christians who feared that knowledge of science would lessen religion's hold on it's congregations created the story. Just like today. Question the church's stance on anything, and you're sinning or are being misguided by the devil.
