I was at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas which was about 50 miles from area 51 (ex husband was in AF). Here is the skinny on area 51, first the folklore.
Area 51 was built to house the Roswell crash alien craft, and where the bodies of the e.t's were kept including one that had survived the crash. They were using the wrecked craft to try and develope alien like craft of our own i.e stealth bomber/fighter and the SR-71 black bird. Also to develop weapons as well.
Now for the truth. Not so fanciful
Area 51 or "Dreamland" (as it is called by the ones that worked there), was a top secret research, developement and test site. It is where they tested out the various advanced aircraft. Not just the stealth types but the B1-B, the F-18 and other not so mysterious types. Area 51 is also part of the bombing training area that is used by the Air Force, Marines, and Navy. People that worked there were picked up by bus and were driven in, they were not allowed to use their own vehicles. There they would work for 5 days then they would return home. They were forbidden to discuss ANYTHING that they did or saw there. They were not allowed to talk about any part of their work.
There were no alien ships, alien life forms or alien technology. Area 51 is now deserted and closed down. They had an "incident" that caused a radiation problem. Our top secret facility has been moved else where, but noone knows where.

Nobody knows the whole story behind it - except for the US government. However, pretty much every alien sighting has been proven to be a hoax of some sort, so there's no reason to think that Area 51 is where aliens are being kept (despite what the conspiracy theorists will try to tell you and giving you whacked out so-called "evidence" in the process).
I think it's just used for testing out new technologies for the armed forces, and there has also been a suggestion made that the place could even be used as a toxic waste dump.

Nearly nobody knows the whole story, but from what I understand, Area51 was used as a test site for many top secret aircraft like the SR71 Blackbird and Stealth bomber.
No aliens were there, sorry.

it's a testing ground for military aircraft. You have to keep SOME things secret and how do you keep the latest and greatest military fighters a secret? It's very hard. Sooooo, ya put a test site facility out in the desert and fly your planes at night. It's not WEIRD, it's a necessity. It's how we stay SAFE and SECURE. It's also how we get the coolest aircraft in the world!

You think the government that couldn't keep the nixon tapes secret could hide aliens for 50 years? if clinton couldnt keep monica lewinsky to keep her mouth shut (except when he wanteerd her to use it) how crazy would it be to think he could keep aliens secret? also if the area 51 was developing aircraft from alien tech our planes would be better and the space shuttle wouldn't have exploded...twice...

I live in Las Vegas and have been out there to "watch"any times.
I have a theory about 51. They at one time had something out there.
when people started to go out and watch they moved it somewhere else. Now They keep doing things to make us think there is something out there so we don't go looking for where they move it to. Why else would they keep saying there nothing out there yet keep letting things "slip" about area 51.

Supposedly, it's testing highly classified weapons and air crafts based on "UFO" technology. I don't know if there were really aliens there but the conspiracy theory is that the most outrageous, unimaginable things are true.
So I've heard.
