i agree with pancho. esp with a jersey #10 that's regarded as a 'magical' number, i don't think that ANY player would recklessly ask for it. they must know how well they stand in that team to actually wear it. they wouldn't want to embarass themselves if they don't live up to the standard of the #10. but it is an honor to don that jersey in a high profile team. past #10 includes Pele, Maradona, Puskas, Platini and current ones are Ronaldinho, and Zidane (though he's gonna retire but his jersey now IS #10). see the pattern there? wearing #10 is like being amongst the best of the best. so, maybe the management assigns who gets that jersey? that i'm not so sure, but what i know is that you have pretty big shoes to fill if you want to wear a #10 when the previous wearer in the team is super good (direct reference to Zizou).. that said, the rest is just random i guess.. after #10, most players would just ask for a number with personal connections, or a unique one that fans can easily relate them to. so it's usually #10 that has duplicate requests or #5 (i dunno i heard on tv that day that in Spanish football, #5 is considered magical as well - try looking up who are the previous #5s in Barca or Real).

Especially a number like number 10 is awarded to the player who deserves it the most. The playmaker, the key person on the team, the most experienced maybe. However in most cases you get the number you request. On duplicates it goes to seniority.

The player with the most seniority gets the number.

Typically the player who's been around longest gets first dibs, unless one of the other players pays them to get the number.

well, seniority is probably the biggest factor, and how good the player is. If you suck and arent going to play that much, you probably wont get first choice. Also if someone has wore that number on the team before they will probably get it again.
