You want to buy this really nice bag for $97.
And the problem is, you dont have the money.

So you tried to borrow 50 from mom, and another 50 from dad. Which will gain you a 100.

Excitingly, you bought that bag and got your change (which is 3)

Now, your plan is to handle your debts to your parents.

From your 3bucks, you retuned $1 to mom (which will make your debt 49), and $1 to dad(which will make your debt 49)

Adding the debts, 49+49, will make it 98. plus the remaining $1, which will make it 99.

Now the question is, where did that mysterious $1 went????

Please answer it!!!

at one point you owned $100 - $97 (bag purchase)= $3

2 X ($50 (debt owed to parents 1&2) - $1 (payment))= $98 (debt)

if you take the $3 - $2 (payment)= $1 (left over)

$98 (debt) - $1 (left over)= $97 (cost of bag, total expenses)

now the grand total $2 (payment) + $1 (leftover) + $97(bag)= $100 (total)

That 1 dollar itn't count in the debt! Because your total debt is 100 and to pay 2 back. Making the total debt 98 not 99. That 1 dollar is net. Which mean you most like keep it or use to pay more on your debt. leave the debt at 48/49 with a total debt of 97.

Just because you have the extra dollar doesn't mean you add it to your debt. If you take the (49+49) 98 you owe and give them the $1you have left, you owe $97 (the $100 - the $3 you already gave them) If you don't give them the $1 it's not part of the debt because it's already added into the $100 you began with.

The dollar was part of the change you got.

The bag was $97 and you borrowed $50 from each of your folks ($100). The remaining is $3. One dollar went to each of your folks and that makes a dollar left over. You still owe your folks $97

you had an extra $3 in the first place because the bag was only $97. u borrowed 50 from mom and 50 from dad which mad $100..so u gave a dollar to mom, a dollar to day and u kept the extra dollar..u wouldn't add the extra dollar into the total anyway..i think...

It simply depends on how you state it. $49 + $49 = $98 LESS the remaining $1, which makes it $97...which, after all, is what you spent. It is a cute question, though.

u added the remaining one to the debt instead of subtracting it. debt should be 97 not 99.

I don't get the last part. Your debt burden totals $98. What you do with the remaining dollar is unclear.
