I think you may be confused. To become a Hearing Aid Dispenser in America you need to contact the Hearing Aid Board in your state and ask them what the requirements are to become a dispenser in that state. They will have a written exam and a practical exam along with some educational pre-requisites and various other conditions and requirements. They may also require you to be an apprentice for a while too, along with certain requirements you must fulfill to become an apprentice.

Once you have a state license and are a practicing Hearing Instrument Specialist with experience, you can then apply to get the NBC-HIS certification. The only real advantage of this is professional recognition and you get some letters after your name. In every state I have checked with there is no requirement to obtain this qualification.

The link I have provided will tell you more about the organization.

Good luck in your desire to become a Hearing Aid Dispenser. It is an interesting and rewarding career. I've been doing it for 12 years now.

Why don't you go to meet some dispensers in your area and see if you can volunteer some of your time in return for using their books. Good luck

You're not confused.

NBC-HIS is part if the International Institute for Hearing Instruments Studies (IIHIS) that provides exam materials for most states. They also accredit Continuing Education courses.

They do have books that you can purchase to study for your exam. I used them to review, and now another employee is preparing to take the exam, and she is studying them. The company purchased the texts, so I couldn't sell them to you (sorry). You can purchase the books separately, though, if you know which one you want (on the right, under products, click "textbooks").
