DS Lite! Definitly worth your $. I have both (I bought the original DS when it first came out). The DS Lite is smaller and the screen has brightness setting which is a big, big help especially when you're playing somewher with a lot of light. The redesign is also a lot more portable since it's smaller and looks great!

DS, they pretty much painted a DS white and made it smaller than a regular DS to make a DS lite.

I prefer Lite :D
Lite, like the name sounds, is "lighter" both in terms of size, weight, and brightness. The stylus is a little bigger so there's a less chance od it breaking and it's also a little more comfortable.
But if you are planning to play GBA games, I'd say the DS because to me it's a little awakard playing GBA games on the Lite. The GBA games don't fit perfectly in the DS LIte, so it sticks out a little and it's kind of weird.

If you have the money, invest in the DS Lite. I have a feeling you won't be regretting it but you might if you end up buying the DS.
